Awards in the field of sports in india.

Sports awards in India are given by the sports ministry of India to honour the players/athletes who have performed extraordinarily well in their field of sports. It is done so as to enhance the player's spirit and recognise his/her achievements. The awards are presented on the national day of India which is celebrated on 29th august every year, the birthday of legendary hockey player major Dhyan Chand. The president of India gives away the awards on this day at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Some of the prestigious and notable awards are:

1) Rajiv Gandhi khel ratna award: This is India's highest sports honour.It is given to the best sportsperson across all the sports discipline in that year. The word "khel ratna" literally translates to "sports jem". This award was named after Mr. Rajiv Gandhi, former prime minister of India.This award was instituted in 1991-92 and was first awarded to India's first chess grandmaster and five times winner of world chess championship, Viswanathan Anand. Recently in 2016 it was awarded to four sportsperson namely PV sindhu for badminton, Sakshi malik for wrestling, Dipa karmarkar for gymnastics and Jitu rai for shooting field. As of 2016 the award comprises of a medal, a certificate and a cash prize of 7.5 lakh rupees. 
2) Arjuna Award: The arjuna award was instituted in 1961. It is given to the best sportsperson in each field of sport every year. It is named after arjuna, the famous archer in the epic mahabharata. recently in 2016 it has been awarded to 15 sports persons in different sports fields. as of 2016, the award comprises of a scroll, a bronze statue of arjuna, and a cash of 5 lakh rupees.






3) Dronacharya Award: The dronacharya award was established in 1985. It is an award presented for excellence in sports coaching. It is named after the popular teacher dronacharya, teacher of arjuna, in epic mahabharta. till date, 91 teachers/coaches have been awarded with this award. First awardees were Balchandra bhagwat, Om prakash bharadwaj, O.M. biambiar. Recently, in 2016 six coaches have been awarded with dronacharya award. as of 2016 this award comprises of a scroll of honour, a bronze statuette of dronacharya and a cash component of Rs. 7 lakh.



4) Dhyan Chand Award: Instituted in 2002, this is India's highest honour for lifetime achievement in sports and games. The award is named after legendary indian hockey player major Dhyan chand. First dhyan chand award was awarded to Aparna gosh for basketball.The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 5lakh, a plaque and a scroll of honour.









5) Maulana Abul kalam azad(MAKA) trophy: This trophy is given for the best performance in sports amongst the universities in the country. It is named after the first education minister of India, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. It was instituted in 1956-57. Punjabi University won the prestigious award for being the best university in sports.

6) Rashtriya khel protsahana purushkar: This is a new award instituted in 2009 by ministry of youth affairs and sports. It is presented to recognise the contribution made to sports by entities other than sportspersons and coaches. This year the award was recommended in four different categories to four institutions.
Apart from these national awards there are many other award which are awarded to sports persons by various state governments also.
